‘Working Around the Classroom’

Daiglen School

CLIENT: The Governers - Daiglen School
CONSULTANT: M J Summer & Company
LOCATION: Daiglen School, Palmerston Rd, Buckhurst Hill, Essex

OUR ROLE

Phase 1: To design and construct a new arts and science block; to build an extension to the dining hall; to make various internal & external improvements.

Phase 2: To design and construct an independent gymnasium building with additional teaching facilities.

THE PROJECT

Due to the size and complexity of the Phase 1, a large proportion of the project had to be carried out during term time. This came with its own difficulties – namely how to maintain services throughout, while ensuring minimal disruption and maximum safety.

The arts and science block had to be built on deep strip foundations, due to an existing cellar in the main building. The gymnasium was substantially below ground level and had to be built on a sophisticated stepped concrete raft, while incorporating a high-tech tanking system. Specialist matching bricks and stonework were manufactured to order.

As part of the contract, we were also responsible for the complete fit-out of the new buildings. This not only included supplying and fitting specialist equipment and bespoke furniture, but also meant landscaping, tarmac and paving to form the new play areas.

THE RESULT

Despite the energetic surrounds of a working school, this project was carried out on time and on budget, generating a great deal of positive feedback.
