'Inner City Idyll'

Andrews Road

CLIENT: Summerbase Ltd.
CONSULTANT: David Kann Associates
LOCATION: 54-59 Andrews Rd, E8

OUR ROLE

To design & construct 6 four storey live/work units, on a restricted inner city development.

THE PROJECT

In order to ensure an efficient and safe construction, we had to put innovative site processes in place. This was easier said than done on a development that was fully surrounded by a busy bus route, the Grand Union Canal and numerous buildings either side.

Given the limited space, our priority was to cause minimum disruption to the surrounding community. We therefore erected a tower crane in the centre of the site, to quickly erect the timber frame. Prior to completion of the roof, this was then withdrawn through the building with another crane.

While designed to compliment the existing Victorian canal-side buildings, the interior was extremely contemporary and technologically advanced. From energy-efficient under floor heating systems - sound and thermal insulation technology – to pre-wired data & communication systems, this made for a very modern build.

The building exterior was finally finished with yellow stock brickwork, with slate and lead roofing. A modern colour scheme further complemented the powder-coated windows, doors and metalwork.

THE RESULT

Formally an underused scrap yard, the building is now a shining example of a ‘brown field’, inner city development.
